5TH STATION OF THE CROSS:
SIMON OF CYRENE HELPS JESUS TO CARRY HIS CROSS
We adore you O Christ, and we bless you,
Because by your Holy Cross you have redeemed the world.
LECTOR: Jesus is exhausted. His footsteps become more and more unsteady, and the soldiers are in a hurry to be finished. So, when they are going out of the city through the Judgement Gate, they take hold of a man who was coming in from a farm, a man called Simon of Cyrene, the father Alexander and Rufus, and they force him to carry the Cross of Jesus (cf. Mark 15:21).
MEDITATION: As Jesus struggles along the road to Calvary, His strength begins to fail. The Cross presses heavily upon His wounded shoulders, and His steps grow slower and weaker. The soldiers, impatient to finish their grim task, fear that He may collapse before reaching the place of crucifixion. So they seize a man from the crowd, a passerby returning from his work in the fields. His name is Simon of Cyrene. Without choice or preparation, Simon is forced to step forward and carry the Cross behind Jesus.
At first, Simon may have felt confusion, fear, or even resentment. This suffering was not his own. Yet as he walks beside Jesus and feels the weight of the Cross upon his shoulders, something begins to change. The burden that seemed like an unwanted interruption becomes a moment of grace. In sharing the Cross, Simon is drawn into the suffering of Christ and unknowingly becomes part of the story of salvation.
In our world today, there are many who carry heavy crosses. Some struggle with poverty and unemployment, wondering how they will provide for their families. Others suffer under the weight of injustice, violence, or discrimination that robs them of dignity and opportunity. Many young people feel overwhelmed by uncertainty about their future, while others battle loneliness, addiction, or despair.
Too often, we walk past these struggles without noticing them. Like the crowd on the road to Calvary, we may see suffering yet convince ourselves that it is not our responsibility. But the Gospel reminds us that following Christ means more than observing from a distance. It calls us to step forward and help carry the burdens of others.
Sometimes we are placed in situations, like Simon, where we are unexpectedly asked to help perhaps by supporting a struggling family member, standing beside someone who has been treated unfairly, or offering kindness to a person who feels forgotten. What may begin as an inconvenience can become an opportunity for grace.
When we help someone carry their cross, we encounter Christ Himself. In the poor, the sick, the weary, and the oppressed, Christ continues to walk the road to Calvary. And when we share their burdens with compassion, we grow in humility, generosity, and love.
Simon of Cyrene reminds us that discipleship often begins with a simple act of service. By helping another person stand, we ourselves are transformed.
Let us pray: Lord Jesus, on the road to Calvary You accepted the help of Simon of Cyrene to carry the Cross. Through this humble act, You showed us that no one is meant to carry life’s burdens alone.
Open our eyes to recognise the suffering around us, the poor, the lonely, the discouraged, and those struggling beneath heavy burdens. Give us the courage to step forward when others need help, even when it interrupts our plans or challenges our comfort.
Teach us to serve with humility and generosity, remembering that every act of compassion is an opportunity to encounter You. Strengthen us so that we may stand beside those who suffer and help lighten the crosses they bear.
May our willingness to serve draw us closer to You and help build a society where kindness, justice, and solidarity guide our actions.
Amen.
Hail Mary, full of grace, the Lord is with thee.
Blessed art thou among women, and blessed is the fruit of thy womb, Jesus.
Holy Mary, Mother of God, pray for us sinners, now and at the hour of our death.
Amen.
Can the human heart retrain, from partaking in her pain,
in that mother’s pain untold.
