7TH STATION OF THE CROSS:
JESUS FALLS THE SECOND TIME
We adore you O Christ, and we bless you,
Because by your Holy Cross you have redeemed the world.
LECTOR: Outside the walls of the city, the body of Jesus again gives way through weakness, and he falls a second time, amid the shouts of the crowd and the rough handling of the soldiers. Our sins weigh down on His Sacred Humanity. Yet it was our pain that he bore, our suffering he endured … He bore the punishment that
makes us whole, by his wounds we are healed (cf. Isaiah 53: 4-5)
MEDITATION: The road grows steeper and the weight of the Cross presses harder upon the torn shoulders of Jesus. His strength is nearly gone. Outside the city walls, surrounded by the harsh cries of the crowd and the rough treatment of the soldiers, His body finally gives way once more. He falls to the ground a second time.
This fall reminds us that the Cross He carries is not only wood. It carries the burden of the world’s sin, the pride, cruelty, injustice, and indifference that wound humanity. As the prophet Isaiah foretold, it is our pain that He bears and our suffering that He carries. The punishment that brings us peace rests upon Him.
In our own lives we know what it means to fall again after trying so hard to keep going. We feel it when responsibilities weigh heavily on us, when problems seem to multiply faster than solutions, or when exhaustion makes us feel that we cannot take another step forward. There are moments when discouragement whispers that there is no point in trying again.
We experience these falls also in our spiritual lives. We promise to change, yet sometimes we slip back into the same habits, the same weaknesses, the same sins. We feel ashamed, frustrated with ourselves, and tempted to believe that we will never truly rise above them.
But the second fall of Jesus speaks a different message to us. Even when He collapses beneath the Cross, His journey does not end there. He rises again, continuing the path of love that leads to our salvation.
Jesus understands our weakness because He has entered into it. When we stumble and fall, He is not standing at a distance condemning us. Instead, He is close beside us, encouraging us to rise once more.
Every fall can become a moment of grace if it leads us back to Him. It reminds us that we cannot walk this road alone. Our strength is not enough by itself but His mercy is always greater than our failures.
With Christ, every fall can become the beginning of a new step forward.
Let us pray: Lord Jesus, when You fell beneath the weight of the Cross for the second time, You showed us that weakness and failure are not the end of the journey.
In our own lives we often stumble under the burdens we carry. We grow tired, discouraged, and sometimes ashamed of our repeated mistakes. Yet You remain close to us even in those moments.
Give us the humility to recognise our need for Your mercy. Lift us up whenever we fall, and help us never to lose hope in Your forgiveness.
Teach us also to be patient and compassionate toward others who struggle. May we never judge those who fall, but instead walk beside them with understanding and kindness.
Strengthen us, Lord, so that each time we rise again we may continue the journey with greater faith, trusting always in Your love.
Amen.
Our Father, who art in heaven,
hallowed be thy name;
thy kingdom come;
thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven.
Give us this day our daily bread;
and forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us;
and lead us not into temptation,
but deliver us from evil.
Amen.
Hail Mary, full of grace, the Lord is with thee.
Blessed art thou among women, and blessed is the fruit of thy womb, Jesus.
Holy Mary, Mother of God, pray for us sinners, now and at the hour of our death.
Amen.
Glory be to the Father,
and to the Son,
and to the Holy Spirit.
As it was in the beginning,
is now,
and ever shall be,
world without end.
Amen.
Bruised, derided, cursed, defiled, she beheld her tender child,
all with bloody scourges rent.
