Catholic Reflection 1 Samuel 15:16–23
“To obey is better than sacrifice.”
In this reading, God reminds us that faith is not proven by outward religious actions alone, but by humble and complete obedience to His will.
King Saul believed that offering sacrifices could excuse his partial obedience, yet God, speaking through Samuel, makes it clear that no sacrifice can replace a heart that listens and obeys.
Saul did what seemed reasonable in his own eyes, but he placed his judgment above God’s command, and this disobedience led to his rejection as king.
The message for us today is direct and challenging:
God desires a faithful heart more than impressive rituals, promises, or good intentions.
True worship is shown when we trust God fully, even when His commands are difficult or do not align with our personal desires.
This reading invites us to examine our own lives, are we obeying God completely, or only when it is convenient? Obedience, rooted in love and trust, is the sacrifice that truly pleases the Lord.
Be blessed.
