My sheep hear my voice, says the Lord; and I know them, and they follow me

There is something deeply comforting in these words of Jesus: “My sheep hear my voice, says the Lord; and I know them, and they follow me.” They remind us that faith is not first about us finding God by our own cleverness, but about God already knowing us and calling us.

That is what makes this so beautiful. The Lord does not speak of a distant crowd. He speaks of my sheep. There is closeness in that. Care in that. Belonging in that. To be His is not to be lost in the masses, unnoticed and unknown. It is to be personally seen, personally known, personally loved.

And then He says, they hear my voice.” In a world full of noise, confusion, opinions, and competing voices, that line feels especially important. So many things try to claim our attention and shape our hearts. But the soul that stays close to Christ begins to recognize something different in His voice, truth without deception, authority without harshness, love without falsehood. His voice does not flatter us, but it leads us. It does not confuse us, but steadies us.

There is also something very moving in the words, “I know them.” Not know about them, know them. Their weakness, their wounds, their history, their fears, their love, their struggle to remain faithful. And yet He does not turn away. He knows them fully, and still calls them His own. That is the kind of knowing every human heart longs for.

And finally: they follow me.” That is where the beauty of discipleship becomes real. Hearing His voice is not enough if we do not move. Love answers. Trust follows. Sometimes the road is clear, and sometimes it is costly. Sometimes we follow with courage, and sometimes with trembling. But the mark of the true disciple is this willingness to keep going after the Shepherd, trusting that wherever He leads is better than anywhere we could lead ourselves.

So this Alleluia is full of peace. It tells us that we are not abandoned to wander aimlessly. There is a voice worth trusting, a Shepherd worth following, and a love that knows us by name.

And in the end, that changes everything.
