Gospel Reflection on John 20:19 – 23

This Gospel begins in a room full of fear. The doors are shut, the disciples are hiding, and their hearts are unsettled. And it is precisely there that Jesus comes. He does not wait for them to become brave before He appears. He enters their fear and speaks the first gift they need most: “Peace be with you.”

This is not a mere greeting. It is the peace of the risen Christ — a peace born not from easy circumstances, but from victory over sin, suffering, and death. Then He shows them His hands and His side. The wounds remain, but now they are no longer signs of defeat. They are signs of love that has conquered.

Then Jesus speaks again: “Peace be with you. As the Father has sent me, even so I send you.” The disciples are not gathered only to be comforted; they are also sent. The peace of Christ is never meant to leave us closed in on ourselves. It prepares us for mission.

But the Lord does not send them alone. He breathes on them and says, “Receive the Holy Spirit.” This is a moment of new life. The Church is not built on human strength alone, but on the gift of the Holy Spirit. Without Him, there is effort but no fire, activity but no true spiritual life.

Then comes the beautiful gift of mercy: “If you forgive the sins of any, they are forgiven.” Here Christ entrusts to His Apostles the ministry of reconciliation. He gives His Church a real share in His mercy, so that sinners may not remain trapped in guilt, but find peace and forgiveness.

This Gospel is full of hope. Christ comes to fearful disciples, gives them peace, fills them with the Holy Spirit, entrusts them with mercy, and sends them out. He still does the same for His Church now. He comes into our fear, speaks peace into our unrest, forgives our sins, and calls us forward in His name.

Let us Pray

Lord Jesus Christ,
You came to Your disciples in their fear
and filled them with peace.

Come also into the closed places of our hearts.
Where we are troubled, bring Your peace.
Where we are weak, give us Your strength.
Where we are burdened by sin, pour out Your mercy.

Breathe Your Holy Spirit upon Your Church once more.
Renew in us courage, faithfulness, and holy zeal.
Make us worthy instruments of Your peace
and faithful witnesses of Your resurrection.

And when we are tempted to hide in fear,
remind us that You still come,
You still speak peace,
and You still send us in Your name.

Amen.
