The question brought to Jesus in today’s Gospel was not sincere. It was a trap.
The Pharisees and the Herodians were not seeking truth; they were seeking a way to discredit Him. If Jesus said taxes should not be paid, He could be accused of rebellion against Rome. If He said taxes should be paid, many of the people might turn against Him. Yet once again, Jesus sees beyond the question and into the hearts of those asking it.
Holding the coin in His hand, He asks, “Whose likeness and inscription is this?” When they answer, “Caesar’s,” Jesus responds with words that have echoed through the centuries: “Render to Caesar the things that are Caesar’s, and to God the things that are God’s.”
At first glance, this may seem to be a lesson about taxes and civic responsibility. It is that, but it is also much more.
The coin bears the image of Caesar and therefore belongs to the realm of earthly authority. But what bears the image of God?
We do.
From the beginning, humanity was created in the image and likeness of God. Every person carries within them a dignity that comes not from wealth, status, nationality, or achievement, but from God Himself. If the coin belongs to Caesar because it bears Caesar’s image, then our hearts, our lives, our souls belong to God because we bear His image.
This Gospel challenges us to examine our priorities. We often give great attention to our work, finances, schedules, and responsibilities. These things are important, and Christians are called to be honest and responsible citizens. Yet Jesus reminds us that there is something infinitely more important: Have we given ourselves fully to God?
God does not desire a small corner of our lives. He desires our whole heart. He asks us to love Him in our families, our workplaces, our decisions, our conversations, and even in the hidden moments when no one else sees.
The wisdom of Christ continues to amaze us because He refuses to be trapped by worldly thinking. He lifts the conversation higher. What began as a debate about a coin becomes a call to discipleship.
Today, let us ask ourselves: What am I holding back from God? What part of my life still needs to be surrendered to His love and guidance?
For everything we have comes from Him, and ultimately everything finds its true purpose in Him.
Let us Pray
Lord Jesus,
You teach us the way of truth
and reveal the wisdom of God.
Help us to fulfill our responsibilities
with honesty, integrity, and love,
while never forgetting
that our lives belong entirely to You.
Renew within us
the image of God
in which we were created.
Teach us to offer You
not only our words,
but our hearts,
our decisions,
and our daily lives.
Free us from selfishness,
from divided loyalties,
and from anything
that keeps us from following You completely.
May all that we do
give glory to the Father,
and may we always remember
that we bear His image
and are called to live as His children.
Amen.
