2ND STATION OF THE CROSS:
JESUS RECEIVES THE CROSS
We adore you O Christ, and we bless you,
Because by your Holy Cross you have redeemed the world.
LECTOR: “Then Pilate took Jesus and scourged him. And the soldiers plaited a crown of thorns, and put it on his head, and arrayed him in a purple robe; they came up to him, saying, “Hail, King of the Jews!” and struck him with their hands. Pilate went out again, and said to them, “Behold, I am bringing him out to you, that you may know that I find no crime in him.” So Jesus came out, wearing the crown of thorns and the purple robe. Pilate said to them, “Here is the man!” When the chief priests and the officers saw him, they cried out, “Crucify him, crucify him!” Pilate said to them, “Take him yourselves and crucify him, for I find no crime in him.'”
(Jn. 19:1-6).
MEDITATION: Jesus stands before the crowd wounded and humiliated. His back has been torn by the scourging. A crown of thorns presses painfully into His head, and a purple robe is placed on Him in cruel mockery. The soldiers laugh and strike Him, pretending to honour Him as king. Pilate presents Him to the people and says, “Here is the man.” Yet the crowd cries out even louder, “Crucify Him!”
Soon the heavy Cross is placed upon His wounded shoulders. Though innocent and unjustly condemned, Jesus does not resist. He receives the Cross in silence and in love. What others intend as humiliation and punishment, He accepts as the path of salvation for the world.
In our own time, many people still experience humiliation, injustice, and suffering. There are those who are mocked, rejected, or treated unfairly because of their background, beliefs, or social status. Some carry the painful cross of unemployment, wondering how they will provide for their families. Others struggle under the weight of rising costs of living, debts, and economic hardship that leave them feeling trapped and powerless.
Many young people today carry the heavy cross of uncertainty about their future. Families mourn loved ones lost to violence, accidents, or preventable tragedies. Communities feel the burden of corruption, injustice, and broken systems that fail to protect the dignity of every person.
Like the crowd before Pilate, society can sometimes be quick to judge, condemn, or mock those who are already suffering. Words spoken carelessly, especially in the public square and on social media, can wound deeply and destroy reputations.
Yet Christ shows us another way. He accepts the Cross not with hatred or bitterness, but with patient love and trust in the Father. His example invites us to carry our own crosses with courage and faith. It also calls us to recognise the suffering of others and to refuse to add to their burdens through indifference, judgment, or cruelty.
Instead, we are called to be people who lift others up, defend the dignity of every human person, and bring hope where there is despair.
When we stand with those who suffer, when we offer kindness to the rejected, and when we work for justice and compassion, we walk the path of Christ who first carried the Cross for us.
Let us pray: Lord Jesus, You accepted the Cross placed upon Your wounded shoulders and turned humiliation into an act of saving love.
Strengthen us when the burdens of life feel heavy and overwhelming. Teach us to carry our own crosses with patience and trust in You.
Open our eyes to the suffering of those around us, the poor, the rejected, the unemployed, the grieving, and those treated unjustly. Give us hearts that are compassionate and hands ready to help lighten their burdens.
May we never mock or judge those who struggle, but instead stand beside them with kindness and solidarity.
Help us to follow Your example of humility, courage, and love, so that even in difficult times we may bring hope and dignity to others.
Amen.
Hail Mary, full of grace, the Lord is with thee.
Blessed art thou among women, and blessed is the fruit of thy womb, Jesus.
Holy Mary, Mother of God, pray for us sinners, now and at the hour of our death.
Amen.
Through her heart, his sorrow sharing,
All his bitter anguish bearing, Now at length the sword has passed.
