9th Station of the cross prayer

9TH STATION OF THE CROSS:
JESUS FALLS THE THIRD TIME

We adore you O Christ, and we bless you,
Because by your Holy Cross you have redeemed the world.

LECTOR: Our Lord falls for the third time, on the slope leading up to Calvary, with only forty or fifty paces between Him and the summit. Jesus can no longer stay on his feet: his strength has failed him, and he lies on the ground in utter exhaustion. Seized and condemned, he was taken away. Who would have thought any more of his destiny? For he was cut off from the land of the living, struck for the sins of his people (cf. Isaiah 53:8)

MEDITATION: The climb toward Calvary is nearly finished, yet the suffering grows heavier with every step. The Cross presses down with relentless weight, and the strength of Jesus is almost completely gone. On the steep slope leading to the place of crucifixion, His body finally gives way again. For the third time He falls to the ground.

This fall is the image of complete exhaustion. The One who carried the burdens of the world now lies in the dust, surrounded by shouting soldiers and a restless crowd. To many watching, it must have seemed as though His journey had come to an end. The prophet Isaiah had spoken of such a moment: one who would be seized, condemned, and struck down for the sins of the people, hardly recognised or understood by those around Him.

Yet this third fall also reveals something deeply human and deeply consoling for us. In our own lives, we know what it means to fall again after already struggling to stand. We make sincere resolutions to change, to grow, to overcome our weaknesses, yet we sometimes find ourselves returning to the same faults that have troubled us before.

There are times when discouragement creeps in and whispers that nothing will ever change. We grow tired of fighting the same battles against impatience, selfishness, anger, or temptation. We feel ashamed that after so many attempts we still stumble.

But the third fall of Jesus reminds us that weakness does not separate us from Him. In fact, it brings Him closer to us. He knows what it means to reach the limits of human strength. He knows the feeling of being overwhelmed, yet He does not abandon the journey.

Instead, He rises once more.

Our Christian life is not built on never falling; it is built on always rising again with the help of God’s mercy. Each fall can become a moment of humility that draws us closer to Christ. It teaches us to rely less on our own strength and more on His grace.

When we acknowledge our weakness honestly and entrust it to the Lord, something remarkable happens. What once seemed like defeat becomes a path toward deeper faith, patience, and compassion for others who struggle.

The journey toward holiness is rarely perfect or easy. But every time we rise again, trusting in God’s mercy, we continue walking the road that leads to life.

Let us pray: Lord Jesus, when You fell the third time beneath the weight of the Cross, You revealed the depth of Your love and perseverance for our salvation.

In our own lives we often grow weary and discouraged when we fall into the same struggles again and again. Remind us that Your mercy is always greater than our weakness.

Give us the humility to recognise our need for You and the courage to rise each time we stumble. Strengthen us to persevere in faith, even when the path feels steep and difficult.

Help us also to lift up those who are weighed down by suffering, injustice, and discouragement in our society. May our compassion reflect the patience and mercy You show to us.

Lead us forward, Lord, so that no fall will ever separate us from the hope found in Your love.

Amen.

Glory be to the Father,
and to the Son,
and to the Holy Spirit.
As it was in the beginning,
is now,
and ever shall be,
world without end.

Amen.

Make me feel as you have felt, Make my soul to glow and melt,
with the love of Christ my Lord.
