13th Station of the cross prayer

13TH STATION OF THE CROSS:
JESUS IS TAKEN DOWN FROM THE CROSS

We adore you O Christ, and we bless you,
Because by your Holy Cross you have redeemed the world.

LECTOR: Mary stands by the Cross, engulfed in grief. And John is beside her. When it was already evening, since it was the day of preparation, the day before the Sabbath, Joseph of Arimathea, a distinguished member of the council, who was himself awaiting the Kingdom of God, came and courageously went to Pilate and asked for the body of Jesus. With him too comes Nicodemus, the same who earlier visited Jesus by night; he brings with him a mixture of myrrh and aloes, about a hundred pounds weight (John 19:39) Pilate was amazed that He was already dead. He summoned the centurion and asked him if Jesus had already died. When
he learned of it from the centurion, he gave the body to Joseph (Mark 15: 42-45).

MEDITATION: The lifeless body of Jesus is gently taken down from the Cross and placed into the arms of His Mother. The One whom she once held as a newborn child in Bethlehem now rests again in her embrace, silent, wounded, and still. Every mark on His body tells the story of a love that held nothing back. Every wound, every drop of blood bears witness to the depth of His sacrifice for the salvation of the world.

For Mary, this is a moment of overwhelming sorrow, yet also one of quiet reverence. The mother who once watched her Son grow in wisdom and grace now holds Him after the cruel violence of the Cross. Her heart is pierced with grief, yet it remains steadfast in faith. As she gazes upon the face of Jesus, she gathers within her heart all the mysteries she has pondered since the beginning, the angel’s message, the birth in Bethlehem, the flight into Egypt, the hidden years in Nazareth, and the words of the young Jesus in the temple: “Did you not know that I must be in my Father’s house?” (Luke 2:49).

Now those words echo again with deeper meaning. The suffering before her eyes is not the end of the story. Even in this moment of profound loss, God’s promise is quietly unfolding. Beneath the Cross, Mary continues to believe, to hope, and to trust in the Father’s plan.

This station invites us to reflect on the sorrow carried by so many parents today, especially mothers and fathers who mourn children lost to violence, illness, accidents, or circumstances too painful to understand. Many carry wounds in silence, holding memories of lives cut short and dreams that will never unfold. In Mary we see a mother who understands that pain completely. She stands with every grieving parent, reminding us that God is present even in the deepest suffering.

At the foot of the Cross, sorrow and hope stand side by side. Though the night is heavy with grief, the promise of resurrection is already drawing near.

Let us pray: Lord Jesus, Your Mother Mary received Your lifeless body with a heart full of sorrow and love. She who once held You as a child now holds You again after the cruelty of the Cross. Through her quiet faith and enduring strength, she teaches us how to remain faithful even in the darkest hours.

Through the intercession of Your Blessed Mother, help us never to repay evil with evil. Fill our hearts with the grace to forgive those who wound us and to respond to hatred with compassion. Teach us to comfort those who mourn, to stand beside those who feel abandoned, and to offer hope to those who carry heavy sorrow in their hearts.

May we learn from Mary to trust in God even when we do not understand His ways, believing that Your love is stronger than death and that Your mercy can heal every wounded heart. Teach us to comfort the grieving and to stand with those abandoned in their hour of loss.

Amen.

Our Father, who art in heaven,
hallowed be thy name;
thy kingdom come;
thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven.
Give us this day our daily bread;
and forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us;
and lead us not into temptation,
but deliver us from evil.
Amen.

By the cross with you to stay, there with you to weep and pray,
is all I ask of you to give.
