14th Station of the cross prayer

14TH STATION OF THE CROSS:
JESUS IS LAID IN THE TOMB

We adore you O Christ, and we bless you,
Because by your Holy Cross you have redeemed the world.

LECTOR: When it was evening, there came a rich man from Arimathea, named Joseph, who was also a disciple of Jesus. He went to Pilate and asked for the body of Jesus … Joseph took the body and wrapped it in a clean linen cloth and laid it in his own new tomb, which he had hewn in the rock (Mt 27:57-60).

MEDITATION: Joseph of Arimathea reverently takes the body of Jesus and lays Him in the tomb he had prepared for himself. At that moment, Joseph could not have imagined the extraordinary mystery that would soon unfold in that very place. To human eyes everything seemed finished. Hope appeared buried together with Christ behind the heavy stone that would soon seal the entrance of the tomb. Yet God was already preparing something far greater than anyone could see.

Joseph of Arimathea stands before us as a powerful witness of courage and faith. While many had hidden in fear, he stepped forward openly and approached Pilate to request the body of Jesus. In doing so he risked his reputation, his safety, and perhaps even his life. Still, he did not hesitate. With quiet determination he offered what he had, a tomb carved from the rock, as a final act of love and respect for the Lord.

In that moment Joseph teaches us a profound lesson: every gift given to God, no matter how small it may seem, is never wasted. What Joseph offered in sorrow became the very place where the greatest miracle in human history would unfold. The tomb he provided, new and untouched, would soon become the cradle of resurrection and the doorway through which life would triumph over death.

So often in our own lives we experience moments when everything appears lost. We bury our hopes, our plans, and sometimes even our faith beneath the weight of disappointment, grief, or uncertainty. Yet this final station reminds us that God continues to work even in the silence of the tomb. The places where we believe the story has ended may actually be the beginning of something new.

Joseph’s act of love also reminds us that perseverance in faith bears fruit. Love never goes unanswered by God. What is offered with sincerity and trust becomes the soil from which new life springs forth. The tomb of Christ, carved from cold stone, becomes the seedbed of resurrection.

As we stand before this final station, we are invited to hold firmly to hope. Good Friday is not the end of the story. The darkness of the tomb will soon give way to the light of Easter morning. The stone will be rolled away. Death will not have the final word. Christ will rise, and life will triumph forever.

Let us pray: Lord Jesus, in the silence of the tomb we are reminded that even when all seems lost, Your love continues to work quietly within the depths of our lives. Often we find ourselves walking through moments of uncertainty, fear, and darkness. Life can weigh heavily upon us, and at times we struggle to see the path ahead.

Teach us to wait with patience and trust, just as the world waited in stillness between the sorrow of Good Friday and the joy of Easter morning. Help us to remember that the trials we face are not the end of our story, but part of the journey that leads us closer to You.

Lord, when we are overwhelmed by suffering or discouraged by the burdens of life, strengthen our hearts with faith, hope, and love. Remind us that death is not the final destination, but a passage toward the eternal life You have prepared for us. Help us to carry our crosses faithfully each day, denying ourselves, walking in humility, and following You wherever You lead.

May we live always with our eyes fixed on eternity, trusting that beyond every darkness Your light awaits us.

Amen.

Hail Mary, full of grace, the Lord is with thee.
Blessed art thou among women, and blessed is the fruit of thy womb, Jesus.
Holy Mary, Mother of God, pray for us sinners, now and at the hour of our death.
Amen.

While my body here decays, May my soul your goodness praise,
Safe in paradise with you.

CONCLUDING PRAYER

Lord Jesus Christ, we thank You for allowing us to walk with You along this sacred Way of the Cross. Step by step You have led us through the mystery of suffering, sacrifice, and love. In Your journey to Calvary we have seen that no pain is meaningless when united with You, that even the deepest wounds can become places where Your grace brings healing and transformation.

Through Your Cross You have shown us that suffering is not the end of the story. In every moment of darkness there remains the quiet promise of Your light. In every tear there lies the hope of resurrection. You have taught us that love given freely, even in the midst of hardship, has the power to renew the world.

We place before You our beloved land and all its people. Bless our leaders with wisdom, humility, and integrity. Guide them to serve not for personal gain but for the good of all. Strengthen them to resist corruption, injustice, and the misuse of power. Inspire them to lead with honesty and compassion so that peace and justice may flourish in our nation.

We also entrust to You our young people. Protect them from despair, unemployment, violence, substance abuse, and the many temptations that threaten their future. As they grow in a rapidly changing world shaped by technology and information, help them to use these tools wisely — as instruments of knowledge, creativity, and unity rather than division or harm. May they discover in You the source of their dignity, their purpose, and their strength.

Lord, unite our communities. Remove every barrier of tribe, ethnicity, and political rivalry that divides us. Replace suspicion with understanding, hatred with forgiveness, and indifference with genuine care for one another. Heal the wounds caused by injustice, corruption, violence, and the disregard for human life.

Teach us to recognize every person as Your beloved child, worthy of dignity and respect. May we never turn away from the suffering of others but instead become instruments of Your mercy and compassion.

We also lift up before You the earth, our common home. Forgive us for the ways we have misused and neglected the gifts of creation. Guide us to become faithful stewards of the land, the waters, and the environment entrusted to us, so that future generations may share in the beauty and abundance You have provided.

Lord, strengthen us when the crosses of life become heavy. When we grow weary or discouraged, remind us that You walk beside us. Help us to carry our burdens with faith and courage, knowing that beyond every Calvary lies the promise of resurrection.

May our lives become witnesses of Your love. May our words bring hope to the discouraged, our actions bring justice to the oppressed, and our hearts reflect the mercy You have shown us.

And when our earthly journey finally reaches its end, welcome us into the fullness of Your Kingdom, where sorrow and death will be no more, and where we shall rejoice forever in the glory of Your resurrection.

Let us pray for the intentions of the Holy Father, for the good of the Church:

Our Father, who art in heaven,
hallowed be thy name;
thy kingdom come;
thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven.
Give us this day our daily bread;
and forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us;
and lead us not into temptation,
but deliver us from evil.
Amen.

Hail Mary, full of grace, the Lord is with thee.
Blessed art thou among women, and blessed is the fruit of thy womb, Jesus.
Holy Mary, Mother of God, pray for us sinners, now and at the hour of our death.
Amen.

Glory be to the Father,
and to the Son,
and to the Holy Spirit.
As it was in the beginning,
is now,
and ever shall be,
world without end.

Amen.

Let us pray: O GOD, who has made holy the wood of the Cross by the life giving blood of Your Son, grant that all who faithfully venerate the Cross may alway live under its protection. Through the Spirit received in Baptism, May You dwell within us. We make this prayer through our Lord Jesus Christ.

Amen.
