Her Life, Conversion, Faith, and Why the Catholic Church Honours the Apostle to the Apostles
Every year on 22nd July, the Catholic Church celebrates the Feast of Saint Mary Magdalene, one of the most remarkable women in the New Testament. Her story is one of healing, faithful discipleship, unwavering love for Christ, and extraordinary courage. Once known only as a woman delivered from evil spirits, she became the first witness of the Resurrection and the first person entrusted by the Risen Lord to proclaim the greatest news in human history. Her life is a powerful reminder that God’s mercy can transform every heart and that faithful love is never forgotten by Him.
For centuries, Mary Magdalene has inspired saints, theologians, artists, and ordinary believers alike. Yet she has also been one of the most misunderstood figures in Christian history. Popular culture has often confused her identity or surrounded her life with myths that are not supported by Scripture or Catholic Tradition.
Who was Mary Magdalene? What do we truly know about her? Why does the Church honour her with a feast celebrated throughout the world?
Let us journey through the life of this extraordinary disciple whose devotion to Christ continues to speak to every generation.
Who Was Saint Mary Magdalene?
Mary Magdalene was a Jewish woman from the town of Magdala, a prosperous fishing community situated on the western shore of the Sea of Galilee.
Her name, “Magdalene,” simply means “Mary from Magdala.”
This distinguishes her from the many other women named Mary in the New Testament, including the Blessed Virgin Mary, Mary of Bethany, and Mary the wife of Clopas.
Although Scripture tells us little about her early life or family, it does reveal the moment that changed everything.
Jesus Christ encountered her and nothing would ever be the same again.
Mary Magdalene’s Deliverance
The Gospel of Saint Luke records one of the defining moments of her life:
“Mary, called Magdalene, from whom seven demons had gone out.”
(Luke 8:2)
The Church does not interpret this passage as meaning Mary was morally worse than anyone else. Rather, it reveals that she experienced profound spiritual suffering from which Christ completely liberated her.
The number seven in biblical language often symbolizes completeness.
Whether understood literally or symbolically, the message is clear:
- Jesus healed her completely.
- He restored her dignity.
- He gave her a new beginning.
- Her response was wholehearted gratitude.
She Chose to Follow Jesus
After her healing, Mary Magdalene became one of the women who accompanied Jesus during His public ministry.
Unlike many disciples who followed Him only occasionally, Mary remained close to Christ throughout His travels.
Saint Luke tells us that she, together with other holy women,
- supported Jesus,
- cared for the needs of the disciples,
- and helped provide for their ministry from her own resources.
This tells us something important.
Mary was not merely an observer, she became an active disciple. She gave her time and her possessions. She gave her entire life to Christ.
Was Mary Magdalene a Prostitute?
This is perhaps the greatest misunderstanding surrounding her life.
The Bible never says Mary Magdalene was a prostitute. The confusion developed over several centuries when different Gospel women were mistakenly identified as the same person.
These include:
- the unnamed sinful woman who anointed Jesus’ feet (Luke 7),
- Mary of Bethany,
- and Mary Magdalene.
Although these women each have beautiful stories, Scripture never identifies them as one person.
Today the Catholic Church clearly distinguishes Mary Magdalene from the unnamed sinful woman.
Her greatness does not depend upon dramatic legends. Her true story is already extraordinary.
Mary Magdalene at the Foot of the Cross
Perhaps the most moving chapter of her life came during Christ’s Passion.
When many disciples fled in fear, Mary Magdalene remained.
She stood beneath the Cross with:
- the Blessed Virgin Mary,
- Saint John the Apostle,
- and several faithful women.
She watched her Master suffer and remained when others abandoned Him.
She witnessed His final breath. This was not the courage of someone seeking recognition but a quiet courage born of love. True discipleship remains faithful even when hope appears lost.
She Witnessed the Burial of Jesus
After Jesus died, Mary Magdalene followed Joseph of Arimathea and Nicodemus to the tomb.
She carefully observed where Christ’s body was laid. This detail becomes very important. It proves that when she returned after the Sabbath, she was not confused about the location of the tomb.
She knew exactly where Jesus had been buried.
The First Witness of the Resurrection
Very early on Easter morning, while it was still dark, Mary Magdalene returned to the tomb carrying spices.
Instead of finding the sealed tomb she expected, she discovered that the stone had been rolled away.
Her grief turned into bewilderment. Soon she encountered the risen Christ Himself. At first she did not recognise Him, believing Him to be the gardener.
Then Jesus simply spoke her name.
“Mary.”
Everything changed. The Good Shepherd called one of His sheep by name. Immediately she recognised Him and exclaimed,
“Rabbouni!” — “Teacher!”
It remains one of the most tender encounters recorded in all the Gospels.
“Go to My Brothers”
The risen Jesus entrusted Mary Magdalene with an extraordinary mission.
He said,
“Go to my brothers and say to them…”
She became the first person commissioned to announce the Resurrection.
Long before the Apostles began preaching publicly, Mary Magdalene proclaimed,
“I have seen the Lord.”
Because of this unique mission, Saint Thomas Aquinas later called her:
“The Apostle to the Apostles.”
The title has remained associated with her ever since.
Why Is She Called the Apostle to the Apostles?
The title does not mean Mary Magdalene was one of the Twelve Apostles.
Rather, it recognises the unique privilege Christ gave her. She was the first witness of the Resurrection. She was the first messenger of Easter.
She was the first to proclaim the Risen Lord to those who would later proclaim Him to the whole world.
It is a beautiful reminder that God often entrusts His greatest gifts to humble and faithful hearts.
What Happened After the Resurrection?
The New Testament does not tell us what became of Mary Magdalene after Pentecost.
Several ancient Christian traditions exist.
One tradition holds that she remained with the early Christian community in Jerusalem.
Another ancient Western tradition says she later travelled to southern France, spending her remaining years in prayer and contemplation.
Eastern Christian tradition associates her with Ephesus, where she is believed to have lived near the Apostle John and the Blessed Virgin Mary.
While these traditions cannot be confirmed with certainty, they all agree on one point:
Mary Magdalene remained faithful to Christ until the end of her earthly life.
How Did Saint Mary Magdalene Die?
Scripture does not record the circumstances of her death. Ancient Christian traditions differ regarding the place where she died.
Some traditions suggest she died peacefully after years of prayer and evangelisation. Others connect her final years with Ephesus or Provence.
Because the historical evidence is limited, the Church does not officially define the details of her death. What remains certain is far more important. She died as she had lived after meeting Christ, a faithful disciple whose entire life bore witness to the power of God’s mercy.
Why Is Mary Magdalene So Important to the Catholic Church?
Mary Magdalene occupies a unique place in the Church because her life reflects the heart of the Gospel.
She reminds us that:
- no one is beyond God’s mercy;
- healing leads to discipleship;
- true love remains faithful in suffering;
- hope triumphs over despair;
- Christ calls each of us personally by name.
In 2016, Pope Francis elevated her liturgical memorial to the rank of a Feast, placing her celebration alongside those of the Apostles in the Roman Calendar.
The decision highlighted her exceptional role as the first witness of the Resurrection and her importance in the life of the Church.
Lessons We Can Learn from Saint Mary Magdalene
1. God’s Mercy Gives Us a New Beginning
Mary’s past did not define her future. The encounter with Christ transformed her life.
No sin, failure, or wound is beyond the healing power of God’s grace.
2. Faithfulness Is Proven in Difficult Moments
Mary remained beneath the Cross when many others fled.
Authentic faith does not disappear when life becomes painful. It grows stronger.
3. Love Recognises the Voice of Christ
Mary recognised Jesus the moment He called her name.
Prayer teaches us to recognise His voice amid the noise of everyday life.
4. Every Christian Is Called to Share the Good News
Mary did not keep the Resurrection to herself. She immediately went to tell the disciples.
Every Christian receives the same mission: to proclaim Christ through both words and the witness of a holy life.
Celebrating the Feast of Saint Mary Magdalene
Catholics honour Saint Mary Magdalene on 22nd July by:
- participating in Holy Mass;
- reflecting on the Resurrection narratives;
- spending time in Eucharistic Adoration;
- praying for deeper conversion;
- seeking the Sacrament of Reconciliation;
- asking for the grace of faithful discipleship.
Her feast is an invitation to renew our own relationship with Christ.

She encountered the mercy of Christ, allowed herself to be transformed by His love, and spent the rest of her life following Him with unwavering fidelity. The Church honours her not because her life was free from struggle, but because she allowed Christ to change her completely. She stood by Him at Calvary, sought Him at the empty tomb, and became the first herald of the Resurrection. Her courage, humility, and steadfast faith continue to inspire Christians in every age.
As we celebrate the Feast of Saint Mary Magdalene, may we ask for hearts that seek the Lord with the same devotion.
