The One Thing That Cannot Be Taken Away
The home of Martha and Mary is one of the most beautiful places in the Gospel because it reminds us that Christ desires not only to visit our lives but to dwell within them. He enters an ordinary home, sits among ordinary people, and speaks words that continue to challenge every generation.
Martha welcomes Jesus with generosity. She prepares the meal, serves her guests, and works tirelessly to ensure that everything is in order. Her hospitality is sincere and born of love. Yet, somewhere along the way, her service becomes overshadowed by anxiety. The work that began as an offering to the Lord slowly becomes a burden, and her heart, instead of resting in His presence, becomes restless.
Mary, on the other hand, chooses to sit quietly at the feet of Jesus. She listens. She receives. She allows His words to fill her heart before she rises to do anything else.
The Lord does not criticize Martha for serving. Service is a noble expression of love and has always been treasured by the Church. Throughout history, countless saints have shown Christ’s love through generous works of mercy, hospitality, and sacrifice. What Jesus gently corrects is not Martha’s work but the anxiety that has taken hold of her heart.
How familiar this scene feels today.
Many people spend their days moving from one responsibility to another. We work hard for our families, care for those entrusted to us, meet deadlines, answer messages, solve problems, and carry burdens that no one else can see. Even our service within the Church can become so busy that we forget the One for whom we are serving.
The Gospel reminds us that activity, however good, must always flow from communion with Christ. A disciple who never pauses to pray will eventually lose the joy that first inspired the work. The hands remain busy, but the heart becomes weary.
Mary teaches us that every Christian needs moments of quiet before the Lord. Sitting at His feet means opening the Scriptures with a willing heart, remaining faithful in prayer, receiving the Eucharist with devotion, and allowing His voice to shape every decision we make. These moments are not time taken away from our responsibilities; they are what give meaning and strength to everything that follows.
Jesus’ words, “One thing is needful,” invite us to examine our priorities. We often spend great energy pursuing what is urgent while neglecting what is truly essential. Success, recognition, possessions, and endless commitments cannot satisfy the deepest longing of the human heart. Only a living friendship with Christ can do that.
This Gospel also offers comfort to those who feel overwhelmed. The Lord does not ask us to carry every burden alone. He invites us first to come to Him. In His presence we discover peace that the world cannot give, wisdom for difficult decisions, and strength to continue serving with love rather than anxiety.
The Christian life is never a choice between prayer and service. It is a call to unite both. Like Mary, we sit at the feet of Jesus so that, like Martha at her best, we may rise and serve Him joyfully in others. Prayer purifies our intentions, and service becomes the natural fruit of a heart that has first listened to the Lord.
Every day, Christ still enters the homes of His people. He knocks quietly at the door of every heart. May we welcome Him with generous hands, attentive ears, and hearts that seek His presence above all else. For the portion He offers is one that neither time nor circumstance can ever take away.

Heavenly Father,
You sent Your Son to reveal the one thing that is truly necessary.
Teach us to welcome Him not only with our work but with hearts that listen attentively to His voice.
When we become anxious or overwhelmed by the demands of daily life, draw us back to Your presence, where true peace is found.
Bless our families, our homes, and our service, that everything we do may flow from a deep love for Christ.
Grant us the wisdom of Mary, the generosity of Martha, and the grace to keep You at the center of every moment of our lives.
May Your Word guide our thoughts, strengthen our faith, and lead us each day into a closer friendship with You.
