The Lord is my shepherd; there is nothing I shall want

“The Lord is my shepherd; there is nothing I shall want.”

Psalm 23 gives us one of the most beautiful pictures of what it means to place our lives completely in God’s hands. A good shepherd does not simply walk ahead of the flock; he knows his sheep, protects them, searches for them when they wander and leads them where they can find life.

This does not mean that those who trust God will never experience hardship. The psalm itself speaks of walking through “the valley of the shadow of death.” The promise is not that every dark valley will disappear, but that we will never have to walk through it alone.

There will be moments when we cannot see what lies ahead, when prayers seem unanswered or when life takes a direction we never expected. Yet the Lord remains our Shepherd. He knows the road even when we do not.

And perhaps that is the deepest meaning of today’s response: when we truly have God, we possess the one treasure that nothing in this world can take away.

May we learn to trust His guidance in peaceful pastures and in difficult valleys, confident that His goodness and mercy will follow us all the days of our lives.
