“Lead Me, Lord, in the Way Everlasting”
Psalm 139 brings us before a God who knows us completely. He knows when we sit and when we rise, understands our thoughts from afar, and sees the road we are walking even when we ourselves are uncertain of where it is leading.
There is something deeply comforting in knowing that nothing about us is hidden from God. He knows our strengths and our weaknesses, our hopes and our fears, the prayers we struggle to put into words, and even those parts of ourselves we would rather not face. Yet His knowledge of us is not cold or condemning. It is the knowledge of the One who created us and loves us.
That is why the response, “Lead me, Lord, in the way everlasting,” is such a beautiful prayer of surrender. We are admitting that we cannot always see clearly enough to guide ourselves. We need God to search our hearts, correct what is wrong, strengthen what is good, and lead us away from whatever separates us from Him.
Sometimes the way everlasting begins with a very ordinary decision: forgiving someone, admitting we were wrong, resisting a temptation, returning to prayer, or choosing what is right when another path would be easier.
Today, we can make the words of the Psalmist our own: Lord, You know me better than I know myself. Search my heart, guide my steps, and lead me along the path that brings me closer to You.
