“Hear the Word of God and Do It”

There is something deeply beautiful in these few words of Jesus.

A message reaches Him through the crowd. His mother and His relatives are outside, waiting to see Him.

And Jesus responds with words that open the door of His family to every one of us:

“My mother and my brethren are those who hear the word of God and do it.”

Jesus Is Not Rejecting His Mother

Jesus is not rejecting His mother. Far from it.

Mary herself is the perfect example of what Jesus is describing. She heard the Word of God, trusted it, surrendered herself to it, and lived it.

“Let it be to me according to your word.”

Her entire life became a response to God.

And today, Jesus tells us that we too are invited into this extraordinary closeness with Him.

Hear the Word of God – and Do It

But notice what He says.

He does not simply say those who hear the Word of God.

He says those who hear the Word of God and do it.

It is possible to hear the Gospel again and again, to know the Scriptures, to attend Mass, and still allow the Word to remain only something we have heard.

Christ asks for something deeper.

He asks that His Word enter our decisions, our relationships, the way we forgive, the way we speak, the way we treat people, and the choices we make when nobody else is watching.

The Word of God is meant to become visible in the life of the person who receives it.

What Has God Already Said to Me?

Perhaps that is the question this short Gospel places before us today:

What has God already said to me that I still need to put into practice?

Maybe it is time to forgive someone.

Maybe it is time to leave behind something that is drawing us away from God.

Maybe it is time to pray again, to return to the Sacraments, to show mercy, or simply to do the good that we already know we should do.

Jesus Invites Us to Belong to Him

Jesus offers us something astonishing today.

Not merely the opportunity to know about Him, but to belong to Him.

To become part of the family gathered around Him.

And the path He gives us is wonderfully clear:

Hear the Word of God…and do it.

Let Us Pray

Lord Jesus,

Give us hearts that truly listen when You speak.

Keep Your Word from passing through our ears without changing our lives.

Give us the courage to obey You when obedience is difficult, the humility to change when Your Word corrects us, and the faith to trust You even when we cannot yet see where You are leading.

May we not only hear Your Word,

but live it.

And through our daily lives, may others come to recognize that we truly belong to You.
