“Let us be imitators of God, as beloved children.”
There is something deeply moving about the image of a tree planted beside flowing water. No matter how harsh the sun becomes, its roots continue drawing nourishment from a source that does not easily run dry. Today’s Responsorial Psalm uses this beautiful image to remind us of what happens when we make God the foundation of our lives.
A person who walks with the Lord is not someone who never faces difficulties, temptations, or disappointments. Rather, it is someone whose faith remains rooted in God, even when life becomes uncertain. Just as a tree draws strength from the water beneath it, we draw our strength from God’s Word, prayer, and the grace He gives us each day.
But today’s response challenges us to go even further: “Let us be imitators of God, as beloved children.”
Children often learn by watching their parents. They pick up their words, their habits, and the way they treat others. As God’s beloved children, we too are called to reflect the character of our heavenly Father. When we forgive someone who has hurt us, show kindness to a stranger, speak the truth, or offer help without expecting anything in return, we allow something of God’s goodness to become visible through our lives.
And perhaps this is worth asking ourselves today: If someone were to learn about God simply by watching how I live, what kind of God would they come to know?
Would they see His patience in my words, His compassion in my actions, and His love in the way I treat others?
The Psalm reminds us that a life rooted in God bears fruit in its proper season. We may not always see the results of our faithfulness immediately, but every act of love, every honest choice, and every effort to live according to His Word matters.
May we never be content merely to call ourselves God’s children. May we strive each day to live in such a way that others can recognise the goodness of our Father through us.
