Gospel Reflection on Matthew 7:6, 12–14

Today’s Gospel brings together three powerful teachings that can shape the whole of our Christian life: reverence for what is holy, love of neighbour, and the courage to choose the narrow path.

Jesus first reminds us that what is sacred should never be treated carelessly. The gift of faith, the Holy Eucharist, the Word of God, and the grace we have received are treasures entrusted to us. They are meant to be shared with wisdom, humility, and love, always respecting the freedom and readiness of those who hear the Gospel.

He then gives us what has often been called the “Golden Rule”: “Whatever you wish that men would do to you, do so to them.” This is far more than a call to simple kindness. It is an invitation to see every person through the eyes of Christ. Before speaking, we ask whether our words would bring healing if they were spoken to us. Before judging, we remember our own need for mercy. Before acting, we choose the path of charity. In this way, love becomes not merely a feeling but a daily decision.

Finally, Jesus speaks of the narrow gate. The world often tells us that the easiest road is the happiest one. The Gospel teaches otherwise. The narrow gate is the way of forgiveness when resentment seems easier. It is honesty when compromise appears more profitable. It is faithfulness in marriage, integrity at work, patience in suffering, and perseverance in prayer even when God seems silent. This road is demanding because it calls us to become more like Christ, yet it is also the only road that leads to the fullness of life.

Every day presents us with countless choices. Some are small and unnoticed, while others shape the direction of our lives. Each decision to love, to forgive, to speak truth with compassion, and to remain faithful to God is another step through the narrow gate. We do not walk this path alone. The Lord walks before us, strengthening us with His grace and inviting us to trust Him more deeply.

May today’s Gospel encourage us not to seek the easiest path, but the faithful one. For the road that leads to eternal life is not measured by comfort, but by love.

Let us Pray

In the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. Amen.

Heavenly Father, You have shown us the way that leads to life through Your Son, Jesus Christ. Grant me the wisdom to treasure what is holy, the generosity to treat others with the same love and mercy I hope to receive, and the courage to choose the narrow path each day.

When I am tempted to follow what is easy rather than what is right, strengthen my heart with Your grace. Help me to remain faithful in my words, my choices, and my witness, so that my life may reflect the love of Christ to everyone I meet.

Mary, Mother of the Church, walk with me and lead me always to your Son.

Through Christ our Lord.

Amen.
