Maria Teresa Goretti was born on October 16, 1890, in Corinaldo, in the province of Ancona, Italy.
She was the third of six children born to Luigi Goretti and Assunta Carlini Goretti, a poor but deeply faithful Catholic family.
Life was never easy.
The Goretti family worked as tenant farmers, earning only enough to provide the basic necessities for their children. Although materially poor, they were spiritually rich. Prayer formed the centre of family life. The Rosary was prayed regularly, the children were taught to love God from an early age, and Sundays were devoted to Mass whenever circumstances allowed.
Maria grew up surrounded by hard work and simple faith.
She helped her mother with cooking, cleaning, sewing, and caring for her younger brothers and sisters. Neighbours often remarked on her cheerful spirit, her willingness to help others, and the quiet kindness she showed to everyone she met.
Even as a child, Maria possessed an unusual maturity, she loved prayer and Our Lady.
She eagerly anticipated the day she would receive First Holy Communion, believing that Jesus in the Eucharist would become her greatest strength.
A Childhood Marked by Suffering
When Maria was still very young, the family moved south in search of better opportunities.
They eventually settled near Nettuno, south of Rome, where they shared a farmhouse with another farming family, the Serenellis.
Life became even more difficult.
The two families lived in cramped conditions, sharing both the house and the fields they cultivated.
Tragedy struck when Maria was only nine years old.
Her father, Luigi, contracted malaria and died, leaving Assunta alone to care for six children.
From that moment, Maria’s responsibilities increased dramatically. While her mother worked long hours in the fields, Maria became responsible for the household. She cooked meals, cleaned, cared for her younger siblings, mended clothes and with all this chores she rarely complained.
Those who knew her remembered a young girl who accepted responsibility with remarkable generosity and whose joy never seemed to disappear despite the hardships surrounding her.
A Deep Love for Jesus
Maria’s greatest desire was to belong completely to Christ.
Although she had little formal education because of poverty, she eagerly learned the catechism whenever she had the opportunity.
She treasured the sacraments. She especially loved receiving Holy Communion, describing it as the happiest moment of her life. Her faith was practical rather than dramatic, praying faithfully each day.
She obeyed her mother and treated everyone with kindness. She forgave quickly, worked diligently and lived the Gospel in the ordinary duties of everyday life.
It was precisely this quiet fidelity that prepared her for the extraordinary witness she would one day give.
Growing Tensions in the Household
Living with the Serenelli family brought increasing difficulties.
One member of the household, Alessandro Serenelli, a young man in his late teens, began to behave in ways that deeply troubled Maria.
He frequently made inappropriate remarks and advances toward her. Maria consistently rejected them.
She understood, even at her young age, the sacred dignity of the human person and the importance of remaining faithful to God’s commandments. She also feared for Alessandro’s soul.
Rather than responding with hatred, she often urged him to turn away from sin, reminding him that such actions offended God. Her courage was remarkable.
Despite feeling afraid, she refused to compromise her Christian convictions.
Her love for Christ gave her the strength to defend both her dignity and the dignity God had entrusted to her.
Martyrdom, Forgiveness, and a Conversion That Changed Lives
The greatest moments of holiness often unfold in silence. For Maria Goretti, that moment came on the afternoon of July 5, 1902. She was only eleven years old.
While her mother and other family members were working in the fields, Maria remained at home caring for her younger siblings and attending to the household chores. It was an ordinary summer day, much like countless others she had lived before.
But before the day ended, she would offer the greatest witness of Christian courage.
A Choice Rooted in Faith
Alessandro Serenelli, who had long harboured sinful intentions toward Maria, found her alone in the farmhouse. He attempted to force himself upon her. Maria resisted with all her strength.
Her refusal was not motivated simply by fear. It sprang from her deep love for God and her understanding of the sacred dignity of every human person.
She cried out: “No! It is a sin! God does not want it! You will go to hell!”
Those words reveal the extraordinary depth of her faith.
Even in the face of terrible danger, Maria was concerned not only for her own safety but also for Alessandro’s eternal soul.
She knew that sin wounds both the victim and the one who commits it. Her courage was born from charity.
The Attack
Enraged by her refusal, Alessandro attacked Maria with a knife. He stabbed her multiple times before fleeing the house. Neighbours rushed to help after hearing the commotion.
Maria was transported by horse drawn cart to the nearest hospital in Nettuno and later received medical care in Rome. Doctors worked desperately to save her life.
Despite undergoing surgery without modern anaesthetics, they soon realised that her injuries were too severe. Throughout her suffering, Maria remained remarkably peaceful.
She offered her pain to God, she prayed. She never spoke words of hatred toward the man who had attacked her.
The Words That Changed History
Before her death, a priest asked Maria one final question. He asked whether she forgave Alessandro. Her response has echoed throughout the Church ever since.
She answered: “Yes, I forgive him… and I want him to be with me in Heaven.”
These simple words transformed her story forever. Maria did not merely speak about forgiveness.
She lived it at the most difficult moment imaginable. She fulfilled Christ’s own command:
“Love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you.” (Matthew 5:44)
At just eleven years of age, Maria demonstrated a heroic charity that continues to inspire Christians around the world.
Entering the Father’s House
Saint Maria Goretti died on July 6, 1902, after receiving the Sacraments and peacefully commending her soul to God. The Church honours her as both a Virgin and a Martyr.
She is recognised as a martyr because she freely chose fidelity to Christ and the virtue of chastity rather than surrendering to grave sin, even at the cost of her own life.
Her death was not simply the tragic ending of a young life.It became a powerful testimony that holiness is worth every sacrifice.
The Conversion of Alessandro Serenelli
Perhaps the most extraordinary chapter of Maria’s story began after her death.
Following his conviction, Alessandro Serenelli was sentenced to thirty years in prison.
At first, he remained angry, bitter, and unrepentant. Then, several years into his imprisonment, something remarkable happened. Alessandro later recounted that Maria appeared to him in a dream.
In the vision, she was dressed in white, standing in a beautiful garden, gathering white lilies.
She approached him with a gentle smile and offered him the flowers. As he accepted them, each lily miraculously turned into a flame. When he awoke, his heart had changed.
He recognised the depth of his sin and began sincerely seeking God’s mercy. From that day forward, Alessandro became a different man.
He devoted himself to prayer, accepted responsibility for his crime, and embraced a life of genuine repentance.
A Meeting Marked by Grace
After completing his prison sentence, Alessandro sought out Maria’s mother, Assunta Goretti.
It was Christmas. He came not to defend himself but to ask forgiveness. Many would have found such forgiveness impossible.
Yet Assunta responded with words that reflected the Gospel her daughter had lived so faithfully.
She said: “If my daughter forgave you, who am I to withhold forgiveness?”
Together, they attended Midnight Mass and received Holy Communion.
It remains one of the most moving examples of Christian reconciliation in modern history.
The cycle of violence had been broken, not through revenge, but through mercy.
A Witness That Continues to Speak
Saint Maria Goretti’s story is often remembered because of her martyrdom.

Declared Blessed by the Church

Recognising the widespread reputation of her holiness, the Church carefully investigated her life and martyrdom.
On April 27, 1947, Pope Pius XII beatified Maria Goretti in Saint Peter’s Basilica before an immense gathering of pilgrims.

Her beatification confirmed what countless believers had already come to recognise: Maria’s life reflected the Gospel in an extraordinary way.
The Youngest Canonized Saint of Modern Times
Only three years later, on June 24, 1950, Pope Pius XII canonized Maria Goretti in Saint Peter’s Square. The ceremony drew one of the largest crowds ever assembled for a canonization at that time.
Among those present was Maria’s mother, Assunta Goretti, the first mother in history to attend the canonization of her own child. It was an unforgettable moment.
The woman who had buried her eleven year-old daughter now witnessed the Church proclaiming her among the saints.
The canonization became a powerful reminder that sanctity is not reserved for the elderly, the learned, or those who accomplish extraordinary public achievements. God often works His greatest wonders through ordinary people who faithfully live the Gospel.
Alessandro Serenelli’s Final Years
One of the most moving testimonies to Maria’s holiness came from the very man responsible for her death. After his conversion in prison, Alessandro Serenelli devoted the rest of his life to prayer, penance, and humble service.
Following his release, he spent many years as a lay brother working in a Capuchin monastery, performing simple tasks with quiet dedication. He never attempted to excuse his crime.
Instead, he openly acknowledged the evil he had committed and spent the remainder of his life seeking God’s mercy. Before his death in 1970, Alessandro wrote:
“Maria is now my saint. She forgave me, and I hope to be with her in Paradise.”
