Preserve me, O God, for in you I take refuge

There is something deeply tender in this response: “Preserve me, O God, for in you I take refuge.” It is the prayer of a heart that knows its need and is not ashamed to place itself entirely in God’s hands.

These words are simple, but they carry great trust. The psalmist does not first speak of strength, plans, or solutions. He speaks of refuge. That means he knows that God is not only to be admired, but relied upon. Not only praised from afar, but clung to in times of need.

There is a beautiful humility in that.

So often we try to carry everything alone. We act as though safety must come from our own control, our own wisdom, or our own efforts. But this psalm reminds us that true peace begins when the soul learns where to run. And the safest place the heart can rest is in God.

To say, “Preserve me, O God,” is not weakness. It is faith.

It is the prayer of someone who knows that the world can shake, that life can wound, that the heart can grow tired but that God remains a secure refuge. And that alone is enough to make this little verse full of comfort.
