“Blest be the Lord, my rock.”
There are moments in life when everything we have depended upon suddenly feels uncertain. Our health may fail, financial difficulties may overwhelm us, relationships may become strained, and the future we once looked forward to may seem frightening. It is during such moments that today’s Responsorial Psalm speaks most deeply to our hearts.
King David calls the Lord his rock, his fortress, his stronghold, and his deliverer. These are not the words of a man who has never experienced hardship. They come from someone who has known danger, fear, and opposition, yet has discovered that God’s faithfulness is greater than the troubles surrounding him.
A rock remains firm even when the storms rage around it. In the same way, God does not promise us a life without difficulties, but He offers us a foundation that will not give way beneath our feet.
What makes this Psalm especially beautiful is that David does not simply ask God for protection. He praises Him. Even after everything he has endured, his heart still finds a reason to sing a new song to the Lord.
And perhaps this is the lesson we need most today. How often do we remember God when we are desperate for help, yet forget to thank Him when He has carried us through our difficulties?
Sometimes His protection comes through an answered prayer. Sometimes it comes through the strength to endure another day, the kindness of someone who stands beside us, or the quiet peace that keeps us from surrendering to despair.
Perhaps today we should ask ourselves: When the things I depend upon begin to shake, where do I place my trust?
May we learn to praise God not only when our prayers are answered, but also when the road ahead remains uncertain. For the Lord who has sustained us through yesterday’s struggles will not abandon us in tomorrow’s trials.
“Blest be the Lord, my rock.” May these words become more than a response we recite at Mass. May they become the faith by which we live each day.
