The Joy of Finding What Was Lost
God Never Gives Up on a Lost Soul
Today’s Gospel reveals one of the most comforting truths of our Christian faith: no matter how far we wander from God, His love for us never ceases.
When the Pharisees and scribes complain that Jesus welcomes sinners and eats with them, He responds with two beautiful parables: the lost sheep and the lost coin.
Through these stories, Jesus teaches us that every human soul is precious in the eyes of God. The shepherd who leaves his ninety-nine sheep to search for the one that has wandered away reveals the heart of our heavenly Father, who does not abandon His children when they fall into sin.
What is particularly moving is that the shepherd does not punish the sheep when he finds it. Instead, he lifts it onto his shoulders and carries it home with joy.
This is the mercy of God. He does not rejoice in our failures or desire our condemnation. He longs for our repentance so that He may restore us to His friendship.
No one is so lost that God’s mercy cannot reach them, and no sin is greater than His forgiveness when we turn to Him with sincere repentance.
The Joy of Heaven Over One Repentant Sinner
Jesus declares:
“There is joy before the angels of God over one sinner who repents.”
These words remind us that repentance is not merely an admission of wrongdoing. It is a return to the loving embrace of our heavenly Father.
Sometimes we carry the weight of past mistakes, believing that we have disappointed God too deeply to deserve His forgiveness. Yet today’s Gospel assures us that heaven rejoices whenever a sinner sincerely turns away from evil and returns to the Lord.
The woman who searches carefully for her lost coin teaches us something equally important. Although she still possesses nine other coins, she refuses to give up searching for the missing one.
In the same way, God sees the value of every person. He knows each of us personally, and no one becomes unimportant because of weakness, failure, or sin.
Through the Sacrament of Reconciliation, Christ continues to offer us His forgiveness and the grace to begin again. We need only approach Him with humility, sincere contrition, and a willingness to change our lives.
Learning to Show the Mercy We Have Received
Today’s Gospel also challenges the way we treat those who have fallen into sin.
The Pharisees were troubled because Jesus welcomed sinners. They saw people whose failures deserved condemnation, while Jesus saw souls in need of healing and salvation.
How often are we quick to judge others because of their mistakes, forgetting that we too depend upon God’s mercy?
As followers of Christ, we must never confuse mercy with approval of sin. Jesus welcomes sinners precisely because He desires their conversion and salvation.
We are therefore called to speak the truth with charity, encourage those who have lost their way, forgive those who sincerely seek reconciliation, and help others discover the love of God.
Perhaps someone in our family, parish, or community has drifted away from the Church. Instead of condemning them, we can pray for them, reach out with kindness, and become instruments through whom God invites them home.
A truly Christian heart does not rejoice when another person falls. It rejoices when that person rises again through the mercy of God.
As we reflect upon today’s Gospel, let us remember that each of us has, at some point, been like the lost sheep. Yet the Good Shepherd continues to seek us, calling us away from sin and towards the fullness of life in Him.
May we never be afraid to return to His loving embrace, and may we always extend to others the same mercy that we ourselves hope to receive.
For the greatest joy in heaven is not found in the punishment of a sinner, but in the salvation of a soul that has returned to God.
Let Us Pray
Lord Jesus Christ, our Good Shepherd and merciful Saviour, You came to seek and save those who were lost.
Forgive us for the times we have wandered away from Your love, and grant us the grace of sincere repentance through the Sacrament of Reconciliation.
Teach us to forgive others, show mercy to those who have fallen, and welcome with love those who seek to return to You.
Through the intercession of the Blessed Virgin Mary, Refuge of Sinners, guide us along the path of holiness, that we may one day rejoice with the angels and saints in Your heavenly Kingdom.
You who live and reign with God the Father, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, God, for ever and ever.
Amen.
