Gospel Reflection on Matthew 6:19 – 23

In today’s Gospel, Jesus gently asks us a question that reaches far beyond our possessions: What truly holds your heart? It is a question every disciple must answer honestly, because whatever we treasure most will quietly shape our decisions, our priorities, and ultimately the direction of our lives.

Our world often measures success by wealth, influence, recognition, or material comfort. Yet Jesus reminds us that these things, valuable though they may seem, are fragile. They can fade, be lost, or disappoint us. The treasures of heaven, however, are never diminished. Every act of love, every hidden sacrifice, every sincere prayer, every work of mercy, every moment of forgiveness, and every faithful step taken with Christ becomes a treasure that no earthly power can take away.

The Lord also speaks about the eye being the lamp of the body. He is inviting us to examine the way we look at the world. A heart fixed on God learns to see with gratitude instead of envy, with compassion instead of judgment, and with hope instead of fear. When Christ becomes our greatest treasure, our vision becomes clearer, and His light begins to illuminate every part of our lives. We no longer live only for ourselves, but for the Kingdom that is already growing among us.

This Gospel is not a call to reject the good things of this world, but to place them in their proper order. Our work, our families, our talents, and even our possessions become blessings when they are offered back to God and used in the service of others. The Christian life is one of wise stewardship, recognizing that everything we have is ultimately a gift entrusted to us by our heavenly Father.

Today, let us ask ourselves: Where does my heart naturally go? What occupies my thoughts? What do I seek first each day? These honest questions can become the beginning of a deeper conversion. The saints discovered that the richest life is not found in accumulating more, but in belonging more completely to Christ. When He becomes our treasure, we discover a joy that neither success nor failure can take away and a peace that remains even in life’s uncertainties.

Let us Pray

Heavenly Father, teach us to seek the treasures that never fade.

Purify our hearts, enlighten our minds, and help us to keep our eyes fixed on Your Son.

May our lives reflect Your light through faith, generosity, and love,

so that everything we do may draw us closer to You and lead others to Your Kingdom.

Through Christ our Lord.

Amen.
