I am the light of the world, says the Lord

Alleluia.
I am the light of the world, says the Lord; he who follows me will have the light of life.
Alleluia.

There is something deeply comforting in this Alleluia: “I am the light of the world.” Jesus does not simply show us a path; He becomes the light by which the path can be seen at all.

Without Him, the heart easily wanders. We mistake shadows for truth, and passing things for lasting ones. But the Lord tells us that whoever follows Him will have the light of life. That means His presence is not only for guidance, but for living — for seeing clearly, choosing rightly, and walking without losing hope.

This is what makes the verse so beautiful. Christ does not leave us in darkness and then ask us to find our own way. He comes near as light, and the soul that stays close to Him no longer walks alone.
