“The Lord Is Compassionate and Gracious, Slow to Anger and Rich in Mercy”
Psalm 103 gives us a beautiful picture of the heart of God. He knows our weakness, sees our failures, and yet His first response to the repentant heart is not rejection, but mercy. He forgives, heals and patiently calls us back to Himself.
The Psalm tells us that God does not treat us according to what our sins deserve. This does not make sin unimportant; rather, it reveals just how extraordinary His mercy is. Like the distance between east and west, God desires to separate us from the sins that burden us and restore us to the freedom of His children.
And if the Lord is “slow to anger and rich in mercy,” then those who belong to Him are called to become the same toward others. We cannot continually ask God for patience while refusing patience to those around us. His mercy received in our own lives should gradually become mercy offered through our lives.
Today, we can simply pray: Lord, never let me forget how merciful You have been to me. Give me a heart that reflects Your compassion, especially toward those I find hardest to forgive.
