Blessed is the Blessed Virgin Mary; for, without dying, she merited the palm of martyrdom at the foot of the Lord’s cross.

“At the Foot of the Lord’s Cross”
Mary’s martyrdom was not the shedding of her own blood, but the terrible suffering of a mother who stood beneath the Cross and watched her Son give His life for the world. She could not remove His suffering, yet she refused to abandon Him. Her presence at Calvary became an extraordinary witness of love, courage and faith.
The Church therefore speaks of Mary receiving the palm of martyrdom without dying. Her heart was pierced by sorrow, just as Simeon had foretold, yet she remained faithful to God even when everything before her seemed filled with darkness.
Mary teaches us that faith is not proved only when life is peaceful. Sometimes its deepest expression is simply to remain with Christ at the foot of the Cross, trusting Him when we cannot understand what God is allowing.
May Our Lady of Sorrows teach us that when our own crosses become heavy, we do not have to understand everything in order to remain faithful.
