“I Will Walk in the Presence of God, in the Light of the Living”
There is something deeply reassuring in these words from Psalm 56. The Psalmist has known fear, danger and tears, yet he does not allow suffering to convince him that God has abandoned him. Instead, he remembers that God has heard his prayer, seen his tears and remained beside him through it all.
To “walk in the presence of God” means more than remembering God during prayer or when we enter a church. It means learning to live each ordinary day conscious that the Lord is near: in our work, our families, our struggles, our decisions and even in those moments when life does not unfold as we hoped.
The beautiful phrase “in the light of the living” also speaks of hope. Darkness does not have the final word. For Christians, this hope reaches its fullness in Christ, who has conquered sin and death and opened for us the way to eternal life.
Sometimes faith is simply the courage to keep walking when we cannot yet see where the road will lead, trusting that the God who has carried us this far will not abandon us now.
Today, may our prayer be simple: Lord, wherever this day takes me, let me walk through it in Your presence.
