“When I Awake, I Shall Be Filled with the Vision of Your Presence, O Lord”
Psalm 17 gives voice to a heart that has discovered that God Himself is our deepest longing. We spend much of life searching for things we hope will satisfy us, security, success, recognition or comfort—yet even the best things of this world cannot completely fill the human heart.
The Psalmist prays with confidence because he knows that God hears him: “I call upon you, answer me, O God.” This is the confidence of faith. Even when God seems silent, prayer is never wasted. We remain before Him because we trust that He sees what we cannot see and is present even in the darkness.
The response, “When I awake, I shall be filled with the vision of your presence, O Lord,” carries a beautiful hope. For Christians, it points beyond the struggles of this life toward our ultimate destiny: to behold God and live forever in His presence.
Until that day, every prayer, every Eucharist and every moment spent quietly with the Lord gives us a foretaste of what our hearts were created for. We were not made simply to possess the gifts of God; we were made for God Himself.
