You are my praise, Lord, in the great assembly

“You are my praise, Lord, in the great assembly.”

There are moments in life when our hearts are so burdened by suffering that even finding the words to pray becomes difficult. We may feel abandoned, overwhelmed by circumstances beyond our control, or uncertain whether the Lord hears our cries. Yet today’s Responsorial Psalm reminds us of something deeply consoling: the God who listens to us in our suffering is the same God who gives us reasons to praise Him when hope seems lost.

Psalm 22 begins with a cry of anguish, but it gradually becomes a beautiful proclamation of trust and thanksgiving. The psalmist, who once cried out in distress, now stands before the great assembly proclaiming the goodness of the Lord. His suffering has not been forgotten, but it no longer has the final word.

How closely this reflects the mystery of our Christian faith. Jesus Himself prayed the opening words of this Psalm upon the Cross. What appeared to be a moment of terrible defeat became, through His Resurrection, the greatest victory of God’s saving love.

Today’s Psalm also speaks of the poor being satisfied, of nations turning towards the Lord, and of future generations proclaiming His righteousness. It reminds us that God’s mercy is never meant to remain a private blessing. When we experience His goodness, we are called to become witnesses of that goodness so that others, too, may find hope in Him.

This is particularly meaningful whenever we gather for Holy Mass. We come before God carrying different burdens, joys, fears, and thanksgiving. Yet in the Eucharist, we become one family, united in worship before the Lord who gave His life for our salvation.

Perhaps today’s Psalm invites us to examine our own hearts. Do we remember to praise God only when our prayers are answered, or can we also trust and honour Him when life unfolds differently from what we had hoped?

True praise does not mean that we have no struggles. It means recognising that God’s faithfulness is greater than the difficulties we face. It is the quiet confidence that even when we cannot understand His ways, His love has not abandoned us.

May we never forget the blessings we have received, the trials through which His grace has sustained us, and the hope we possess through Jesus Christ.

And may our lives become a testimony of God’s goodness, so that our children and the generations that follow will come to know and love the Lord.

“You are my praise, Lord, in the great assembly.” May these words become the prayer of our hearts, not only when we stand together in church, but in every circumstance of our lives, until the day we join the heavenly assembly in praising God forever.
