I count everything as refuse, in order that I may gain Christ and be found in him

This Gospel Acclamation expresses the heart of Christian discipleship: Christ is worth more than everything we could ever possess, achieve, or cling to.

Saint Paul is not saying that creation, work, family, or the good things of life have no value. He is saying that none of them can take the place of Christ. When we discover who Jesus truly is, everything else must find its proper place beneath Him.

“That I may gain Christ and be found in Him” is a prayer of total belonging. It asks us to examine what we are holding onto too tightly, pride, success, possessions, comfort, reputation, even our own plans and whether any of these have become more important than following the Lord.

To be found in Christ is to make Him the centre of our identity, our hope, and our direction. And when Christ becomes our greatest treasure, we do not really lose what matters most. We discover the One for whom our hearts were made.
